Guestrooms and suites are serene sanctuaries, with ultra-comfortable leather furnishings; versatile wall units; soft velour curtains; and tiny vases of fresh orchids. Getting around: Manhattan north of 8th St is laid out in a grid. Avenues run north and south, while streets run east and west (crosstown). Twenty blocks going north and south or 10 going crosstown equal approximately one mile.
Walking is a popular option for sightseeing, window-shopping, and experiencing the flavor of New York City. Taxis are relatively easy to hail, except during rush hour or inclement weather. Visitors should use yellow cabs only. Subways and buses are efficient and inexpensive (less than $5). MetroCards for subways and buses can be purchased in subway stations and from designated merchants. The most convenient subway access is at Grand Central Terminal, four short blocks from The Alex. Because of expensive and limited parking, as well as challenging traffic conditions, rental cars are generally not recommended.
